The RESPECT Program, designed by models and rooted in the dignity of all individuals working in the fashion industry, provides a blueprint for how to protect models and their colleagues from harassment and abuse. RESPECT will build a transnational partnership between models and industry players, including agencies, publishing companies and fashion brands, which now have the opportunity through this Program to create a safe work environment, free from abuse.

Born of the direct experience and unique understanding that models have of the industry — from the experiences of debt and financial insecurity to the pressure to jeopardize their health in order to book jobs — the RESPECT Program will set a new global industry standard, fostering an environment of genuine accountability in which disrespect and sexual abuse can no longer occur, and protecting the voices of those who speak up when they do encounter abuse.

Our purpose is to enable a working environment in which creative collaboration and self-expression flourishes, and everyone can work without fear of harassment, abuse, discrimination or violence.

about_here

    1. Create a Workplace Code of Dignity and Respect:  Drawing on the expertise of models and their experience within the industry, the Program will outline and implement a rigorous Code of Conduct designed to protect models from sexual harassment and abuse wherever they perform modeling and related services.
    2. Educate models and all stakeholders on their rights and responsibilities under the Program:  Participating companies and agencies will be required to provide education and training for everyone in the workplace — including not only models, but also staff and other contractors — designed to ensure that models are aware of their rights under the Program and of how to bring complaints if they suffer harassment. These trainings will focus on three principal themes: Sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace, eating disorders and nutrition, and substance abuse.
    3. Protect transparency and models’ right to speak up: The Program will include all of the necessary ingredients to ensure that models’ rights under the Code of Conduct are implemented on the ground. For example, the Program will include an independent, transparent enforcement body to monitor the workplace and address complaints of harassment, as well as a safe, confidential and accessible complaint mechanism, which models can use without fear of retaliation.
    4. Go beyond voluntary company policies to enforceable commitments:  Without a concrete commitment to enforce a set of standards, we know that the long-standing problem of harassment and abuse will ultimately persist. In the RESPECT Program, fashion brands, publishing companies, modeling agencies, and other businesses will not only publicly commit to the core principles of dignity and respect, but also sign a binding agreement with the Model Alliance to ensure that everyone working for their company is living up to the RESPECT Program’s standards. In the case of serious or repeated violations of the Code by a photographer or other service provider, publishing companies and fashion brands will be required to no longer work with that individual. Participating fashion brands and publishing companies will give business preference to other participants that are signatories to the Program.
    5. Address economic vulnerability:  To reduce the vulnerability of models to abuse, participating businesses will be required to ensure all models are paid for all of their work in a timely fashion, that there is transparency concerning any wage deductions, and that models’ income is not reduced by unreasonable fees.

“The RESPECT Program comes at a crucial moment for addressing problems that models have silently dealt with for years. We now have a solution that offers an equitable way by which everyone in the fashion industry can be accountable for upholding the standards in which we all believe. It's positive, practical and will make our industry all the better for adopting it. I support this Program because I believe it will create an industry that is accountable and ethical towards its talent--it offers an unbiased set of tools that will help set new standards such that those in the fashion business can enjoy creative freedom and personal safety without sacrificing integrity.”

– Karen Elson, model

"The conversation on the way models are treated has finally started to pick up traction and attention, but solutions to these problems have been introduced by companies and organizations without including models themselves in the dialogue. The Model Alliance's priority is to create a safer industry where models at any point in their career can work in an environment free of abuse of any kind. Their inclusive approach allows models’ voices to be heard without fear of retaliation and creates changes from the bottom up."
